Welcome to WVMC's new Cancer Care Blog! It is our hope to update this blog regularly with important cancer related news and insights that will be particularly useful to people living in North Central Washington as well as our Cancer Center's patients and loved ones.
Survivorship
I would like to start this Blog with a description of WVMC's new Cancer Survivorship program. It is our goal that all of our newly diagnosed cancer patients will eventually graduate through all of their various treatments and be considered cancer survivors! Survivorship issues have long been recognized to uniquely exist for people who formerly were diagnosed and underwent treatment for cancer. Until recently, those unique medical, psychological and social issues have not been routinely addressed nor studied. More and more research is being done for these people and survivorship programs help keep former cancer patients informed and closely followed for all the issues that may come up for a former cancer patient.
Our program has been developed with those patients specifically in mind. The Survivorship program will have many goals. One goal will be to provide patients and their primary care providers with a summary sheet of the care they received and a care plan that addresses quality of life issues. Another goal will be to partner with our wonderful community based support groups to optimize support through survivorship classes. Key services of Survivorship care include on-going surveillance for cancer recurrence, health promotion and risk reduction strategies, research opportunities, and building a collaborative relationship with patient's primary care providers.
Our survivorship team will include patient's known providers and nurse case managers. A survivorship clinic will begin on September 25th and spearheaded by Medical Oncology's, Katie Kemble, DNP, who has done extensive training in survivorship issues. She will work in conjunction with medical oncologist Dr. Mandy Robertson. Each initial appointment will be given 90 minutes to allow for a full and comprehensive development of a Cancer Survivorship Care Plan.
We are so excited to be able to communicate with you through this blog. We are very honored that you allow us to care for you and your family members. We take this responsibility seriously. We promise to concern ourselves with every detail of your care. We are committed to walk this journey with you.
Best regards always, Mitch G.
Cancers are caused by abnormalities in the genetic material of the transformed cells. These abnormalities may be due to the effects of carcinogens, such as tobacco smoke, radiation, chemicals, or infectious agents. Other cancer-promoting genetic abnormalities may randomly occur through errors in DNA replication, or are inherited, and thus present in all cells from birth. The heritability of cancers is usually affected by complex interactions between carcinogens and the host's genome.
