What a wonderful evening. My colleagues and myself were able to participate in a community event entitled the Many Faces of Breast Cancer. Breast cancer patients, their families, and other interested individuals joined us for a lively discussion on current breast cancer issues that are faced every day by our wonderful breast cancer patients.
Bonnie Evans, our breast cancer navigator emcee'd the event. We were able to hear about the amazing resources offered by quality support groups such as Wellness Center, Our House, Cancer Care, Chelan Relay and the American Cancer Society. AstraZeneca hosted the event. It was very gratifying to see the support that our cancer patients have through such concerned and proactive community groups.
My colleagues and I were able to share with the participants some of the exciting developments in breast cancer care. Dr. Malhi shared on the process of diagnosing breast cancer and the current and most modern imaging techniques that are being used to detect breast cancer at the most earliest stage. Dr. Smith gave an overview on treatment strategies and described how the decision for each treatment regimen prescribed is individualized for each cancer patient based on a complex set of tumor and patient characteristics. Dr. Robertson encouraged all patients and their family members in the fact that they are Survivors, and can live out their role as a survivor in their personal life and in their community. I was able to share on one of my passions, clinical research in Breast Cancer and advancing the care of breast cancer patients through intelligently designed therapies and strategies, maximizing effectiveness and minimizing toxicity or side effects.
What a wonderful community feeling! I truly felt like we were all there for each other. I hope all the patients that attended saw that they had a huge team cheering for them and were going to help them on their journey to wellness and health.
